Tropical storm Washi pummelled northern Mindanao island, including the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, on 16-18 December, with flash floods as high as 4.3m washing away schools and damaging or destroying close to 52,000 homes. 1,250 people have died and 176 are still missing. 250,000 people are still in evacuation centers, with relatives or in make shift shelters. The damage to infastructure, agriculture and school buildings exceeds $30 million (US dollars).
